zengo- LOS ANGELES
zengo is a latin-asian restaurant located on the 3rd floor of santa monica place at the promenade. the convenient location, hip and vibrant space, tapas, and interesting cocktails made it the perfect venue to celebrate my friends birthday.
pomelo mezcal margarita- fidencio mezcal / fresh pomelo citrus / grapefruit bitters ($12)
beautiful color. fruity but also quite strong in alcohol.
hibiscus mojito- cruzan rum / hibiscus / mint / lime ($10)
give ‘n take chicken salad – cashew / orange / cabbage /piloncillo-ginger vinaigrette ($11)
this was my favorite dish of the night. love the variety of leaves and texture and the addition of orange.
peking duck-daikon tacos- duck confit / curried apple /orange-coriander sauce ($12)
not entirely traditional but the meat was flavorful and juicy. i didn’t really like the sour flavor to the daikon so i would’ve preferred a wrap instead.
chipotle-miso glazed black cod- daikon radish / pea shoot / lemon-togarashi aioli ($16)
super tender & dericious.
can’t recall what rolls these were but they were OK.
scallops al mojo de ajo- roasted corn- edamame salad / bacon / achiote ponzu cotija cheese / roasted garlic / yuzu sriracha ($14)
again, the scallops were cooked well. portion is on the small side and i don’t like edamame in general.
sea bass- edamame-tofu puree / ginger / chive / yuzu / truffle ($14)
light, fresh, and tender.
i think this was the angus skirt steak churrasco- onion tempura / mustard chimichurri sauce / chipotle egg sauce ($14)
yucca fries w/mustard & horseradish aioli sauce ($6)
chocolate cake/brownie served with icecream
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HEATHER! the dessert was really bomb. rich & cholatey.
one complaint is that the portions runs small and a dish is probably good to share between 1-2 people. also, the food was luke-warm when served. otherwise, zengo would be a great place in santa monica to eat tapas and have drinks with friends.
